Puzzles are an important part of the gameplay in every version of Ao Oni (except version 1.1). With each version of the game, the puzzles seem to radically change and can consist of anything from locating several items to doing calculations by hand. It is always required to solve a puzzle in order to make progress with the game. Version 5.2 has the most puzzles, having a total of 7 puzzles, with 3 puzzles in the Mansion, 1 puzzle in the Basement, 1 puzzle in the Annex, and 2 puzzles in the Annex
